Q.  How does one get (the) News?

A.  With extreme difficulty, especially in the U.S.A.

Why?  Perhaps because it is a business, and the business model (i.e. sell ads and influence people to think and feel in a way (away?) to make them think and feel a need to purchase the products – (products in the ads and the product of the “news” provider itself) – being presented as part of “the News” package.

Workarounds:

  •      Observe what “the News” is not talking about, and seek out that information.
  •      Filter out the majority of (top) stories and lock your thoughts on the subject due to the fact that you do not have enough information – only too much partial information.
  •      Shakespeare’s line in Hamlet “The Lady protests too much, methinks.” should be considered (it works with “gushes too much” also) on most “top stories”.
  •      Think about why your attention is being pointed in one direction when there is so much else going on.
  •       Seek out “news” by the subject(s) you are interested in, and search non-“news” sources.

American “news” is arguably the worst.

Example 1:

“Deadly poison gas cloud speeding your way” – but first, wait for the ads to load.

(try dw.com for a while and see what it is like without ads and when you hit the “back” button, it does what it is supposed to.)

Example 2:

The days of “the good journalist” – did their best to put a story together for an editor to chop up and an often inappropriate headline attached – are gone.

When we relied on newspapers, at least it was on paper and did not go away for a while.  With TV and web “news”,  it can dissappear as fast as you can hit F5.

The web did not kill newspapers – the “news” did.

The news is not trying to kill you, you are needed for them to sell things.

The news is trying to turn your brain into mush.

And:  There is good news!

There really is.  The bad news is:  try finding the good news in the “news”.

Note:  If you are having trouble viewing this, consider the following (imaginary) exchange between four (imaginary) people:

A:  “Happy Mothers’ Day !”

B:  “I’m not your mother.”

C: “You’re not.  Neither is it likely you had a happy one.”

D:  “Enough;  the point is:

  1. A Happy day / (not a Happy Mother)
  2. Assume everyone had one.
  3. Agree it is worthy of having a day set aside in honor of 2.
  4. Greeting cards, flowers, visits, phone calls or whatever are reminders of 1-3 for people who … “

The Twelfh Day of Christmas

The 12th Day of Christmas, Tuesday, January 5, 2016

12 Drummers Drumming…What was on the 11th Day again?

It’s easy to forget, now that the marketing is out for Valentine’s Day.

People out here in Oregon remember the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas, but beyond that?

Maybe it is as simple as people confusing Xmas shopping with Xmas and Giving with giving Thanks on Thanksgiving.

So, now it’s Twelfth Night.  It’s also Tuesday.

Dutch Masters

Spring is coming! The daffodils are coming up. And just in time for us all to get blasted by another Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) – this one from sunspot 1402:

If you want to track it:

But what about our beleaguered postal workers?

Nobody knows how hard these folks work.

Hope springs eternal, but , have you ever seen what goes on in the back of post offices?

It’s complete despair.

They treat every piece of mail with a first class stamp on it like gold and nobody knows.  Nobody gets to see because of security.

Postal employee abuse:  another ugly hidden secret.

Unlimited lifetime labor-

Hegemony

20 Jan

Friday, January 20, 2012

Control is not always all it’s cracked up to be.

Not that it’s lonely at the top – (it is) – so much as that when you just want to take a break;  take your hands off the wheel and let someone else drive for a while.  Enjoy the view.

That can turn out to be a bad idea.

But go ahead.  Give it a whirl.  Maybe it will be different for you.

Climb down the mountain, follow the streams to the valley, ride the river to the ocean and back up into the clouds where you will be plopped right back on top, where you started.

There’s no escape.

Somebody’s got to be the best.   Try not to think about it.
