Happy Fathers’ Day !

Sunday, June 18 th, 2017

When a Father thinks about how much he loves his children, it makes him happy.

Mothers get this right away – you can see it in their face.

I suppose it takes a little longer for it to sink in for the Dad and that is why we wait a month for the Holiday.

Perhaps the two Holidays – (Fathers’ Day and Mothers’ Day) – will be combined in the future, when drones make the deliveries.

Q.  How does one get (the) News?

A.  With extreme difficulty, especially in the U.S.A.

Why?  Perhaps because it is a business, and the business model (i.e. sell ads and influence people to think and feel in a way (away?) to make them think and feel a need to purchase the products – (products in the ads and the product of the “news” provider itself) – being presented as part of “the News” package.

Workarounds:

  •      Observe what “the News” is not talking about, and seek out that information.
  •      Filter out the majority of (top) stories and lock your thoughts on the subject due to the fact that you do not have enough information – only too much partial information.
  •      Shakespeare’s line in Hamlet “The Lady protests too much, methinks.” should be considered (it works with “gushes too much” also) on most “top stories”.
  •      Think about why your attention is being pointed in one direction when there is so much else going on.
  •       Seek out “news” by the subject(s) you are interested in, and search non-“news” sources.

American “news” is arguably the worst.

Example 1:

“Deadly poison gas cloud speeding your way” – but first, wait for the ads to load.

(try dw.com for a while and see what it is like without ads and when you hit the “back” button, it does what it is supposed to.)

Example 2:

The days of “the good journalist” – did their best to put a story together for an editor to chop up and an often inappropriate headline attached – are gone.

When we relied on newspapers, at least it was on paper and did not go away for a while.  With TV and web “news”,  it can dissappear as fast as you can hit F5.

The web did not kill newspapers – the “news” did.

The news is not trying to kill you, you are needed for them to sell things.

The news is trying to turn your brain into mush.

And:  There is good news!

There really is.  The bad news is:  try finding the good news in the “news”.

Happy Memorial Day !

29 May

Happy Memorial Day !

Monday, May 29th, 2017

It is:

  1. A Holiday
  2. A Day off
  3. Dedicated to the ultimate sacrifice of one’s (ones’) Worldlies, marked with a memorial.
  4. Honor

Did I get that right?

It’s important. It is part of learning from the past; lessons passed forward to remember in order to avoid having to learn them again- the hard way.

With only 365 (+/-) days in the year, these people earned one for their contribution.

They say that forgetting is a normal and necessary (healthy) brain function and thinking about war and violent death is not something one wants to think about all the time. It is unpleasant.

The happy part (of Happy Memorial Day) is that we get to relax, socialize, picnic, etc.

We’re here thanks to Them. These people did the job that no one wants to do in order to get it over with so that we don’t have to do it.

D:  “Enough;  the point is:

  1. A Happy day / (not a Happy Mother)
  2. Assume everyone had one.
  3. Agree it is worthy of having a day set aside in honor of 2.
  4. Greeting cards, flowers, visits, phone calls or whatever are reminders of 1-3 for people who … “

The Burden of Wealth

The Burden of Wealth

Friday, April 7, 2017

At the edge of the town there were hills, with clean air and clear views of the sunrise, the snow covered volcanoes and the land below. It was the best place to live.

There was a road connecting these hills. It was well maintained and very smooth. It was so smooth, in fact, that it attained the nick name The Silk Road.

One reason for this is that it was long ago, before smart phones, cars – even before horses. The main source of transportation was camels, whose hooves were smooth and kept the road packed tight.

The Silk Road ran from the end of The Main Road (which divided the North and the South), and ran East in a straight line, pointing to the river and beyond, like the needle of a compass that points north.

The Main Road was referred to by many as The Needle”.

At the intersection of two roads leading to these hills was a sharp turn called The Eye”.

Over the years people accumulated wealth in these hills. More than they needed, in fact and more they felt comfortable keeping. They felt helpless as their wealth and possessions grew. They were rich.

In times of famine and need, the rich men would load up their camels with all of their wealth to bring down the hills to the people of the land. They wanted so much to give all of their wealth away.

However, each time they tried, the sharp turn at the bottom of the hill – “The Eye”- was too much for their camels to manage. They had no choice but to continue on, straight through the “Eye of The Needle”, back up the other hill and deposit their wealth with the people on the other hill, who also had already accumulated too much wealth.

So, this is way it was easier for the wealthy to pass with their camels through the eye of the needle than to give away all they owned to those who needed it most.

This was due to physics; atmospheric pressure, inertia, properties of camel hair, etc.

Hard to believe, but true.
